Wireless Electricity or “Life Unplugged”
O brave new world That has such people in it! –Shakespeare
The bright doctor of electricity said beaming, ‘I can foresee that wire-free energy will be used to recharge cell phones in people’s pockets out in public and electric cars will be able to refuel on the go.’ In fact, the company is already developing an electric car refueler. This is just one aspect of what Dr. Katie Hall, of a company called WiTricity, foresees is a bright future. “Think about it someday I’m going to drive my car home and I’m never going to have to pull in to a gas station. I’m never going to have to plug it in. I can’t even imagine how things will change when we live like that.”
I can’t imagine it either, but I can remember about ten or more years ago thinking that is was most remarkable that you could connect your laptop computer wirelessly through your cell phone. Now that seems cumbersome and crude to us who are utilizing Wifi daily to do our business. And for those who need to stay connected all the time, there is 3G and 4G to keep their devices connected in areas that do not have Wifi connections available or while they are on the go. How different things are from a decade ago and now when we purchase the latest technology, it is already out of date, compared to the latest evolution in technological know-how. Recently, I had heard about a new concept in wireless technology, wireless electricity. Instead of having to plug in all your appliances and equipment, they will run on electricity by means of wireless power.
This new approach is called wireless “resonance” technology or to be more specific it is a Highly Resonant Wireless Power Transfer as stated on the website of the company behind it. The concept was originally developed at MIT and the implementation is currently being developed by a company named WiTricity, located in Watertown, MA. The Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Katie Hall was quoted in a recent CNN article as saying “But, we are not actually putting electricity in the air. What we are doing is putting a magnetic field in the air.”
The field is produced by the means of a coil of electrical wire that generates a magnetic field when power is attached. Then when another coil is brought near it, an electrical charge can be produced without needing any wires. Dr. Hall went on to explain it this way; “When you bring a device into that magnetic field, it induces a current in the device, and by that, you’re able to transfer power, and like that, the bulb lights up.”
When I heard about this wireless electricity I was concerned about what this produced magnetic field might do to humans and animals. Dr. Hall made assurances that the technology is completely safe for people as the concept is akin to WiFi and the energy transfer would be about as easy as a wireless internet connection is to use.
Other proposed applications for the technology are: Charging medical devices under the skin and less obtrusively, a wireless improvement to the heart pump, increasing or making nearly unlimited battery life for mobile devices, and new functionality to all household electrical devices that can save time, money and labor.
The goal for this company (Apart from financial gain) is to provide a lifestyle for the next generation to never have to plug anything in again to charge it. Their belief is that this form of energy can be mass produced in the very near future, efficiently and in an economically viable way.
Wireless electricity was merely a dream and theory of earlier scientists like Nikola Tesla, who experimented with the development of generating wireless electricity. Dr. Hall says their implementation is different from the work of Tesla and others in that it is a localized delivery, generated from the same power sources we use now, delivered to the appliances and tools without benefit of wires or batteries. Recharging batteries without having to plug into a source, means they would be constantly recharged from the magnetic fields being continually resonated and delivered.
This is certainly a new technology with the potential to change our world once again in a dramatic way. Not that I am in any way surprised by this invention, as new revolutionary technology arrives on the scene almost daily. I do have some concerns that all these magnetic waves being generated could very easily have some unknown impact on human lives and on animals and even vegetation.
A case in point is the assertion that wind farms would produce harmless abundant energy with little or no impact on people or the environment. However, there are reports that people who live near the windmills suffer from migraine headaches and other maladies they never had prior to them being installed.
What could be more significant in the long run is the prophetic implications from such technology. What does God feel about the constant striving of mankind to be self-reliant, struggling to exclude relying on God from their day to day needs? So much of today’s technology serves as an obstacle to having God’s electrifying presence in our homes. If He lives in our home He can provide much of the power and enthusiasm for our day to day lives, especially the most important thing which needs to be energized – our family and home relationships.
With all this tremendous technology of today, we enjoy many conveniences to give us more time to do more, and learn more. Information is available to us with a few keyboard strokes and the click of a mouse. God told us centuries ago when the prophet Daniel was captive in Babylon that this would be a sign of the last days, when at that time, His plan for man and the world would be accomplished. (last chapter of Daniel)
No one can argue that travel and knowledge has increased greatly in their very lifetime. Now, with the internet, the thing God foretold has come into being. Man can communicate with anyone that has benefit of a computer, cell phone or TV anywhere on the globe. Differences in language are unimportant, as internet browsers have translators built into them. It is possible to communicate with almost anyone, anywhere, at any time, with just a few clicks.
I am not saying that we should go out to the woods like Thoreau did to escape the pressures of modern life or that you will be condemned by using modern conveniences. What I am saying is that man left to his own devices, without God tempering him, is capable of all sorts of big ideas, many quite perverse. Wireless electricity and its implications is newsworthy and advantageous. However, it should be reckoned as a further fulfillment of end-times prophecy and one should be careful not to let it keep them strictly earthbound or in league with any form of the antichrist spirit that is seeking to gain total control of the souls of this earth. As with any advance in travel, technology or knowledge which might lead us to a remote desert where there is no faith we would be wise to proceed with caution. We can keep the battery to our vehicle charged but let us also keep our eyes on the road, our hands on the wheel and our foot close to the brake.
“But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” Dan 12:4
