New Holy Grail, Same Old Unholy Idolatry
The newly identified “Holy Grail” in question, is made of Onyx and gold and is kind of a cup within a cup with jeweled embellishments. In the mythology of the chalice, the prevailing question has been long asked; “Whom does it serve?” In view of all the confusion surrounding this vessel I would put forth that it serves the author of confusion, who is Satan. Those promoting the legend of the cup make lofty claims about it being used at the Last Supper and being a receptacle for Jesus’ blood at the crucifixion. Joseph of Arimathea, who cared for Jesus’ body after the crucifixion was said to have collected his blood after his side was pierced, in the cup. Jesus’ blood is said to give it supernatural powers. This assertion is false, based on the scriptural account, that water issued from Jesus after his side was pierced, not blood. To those unfamiliar with the Bible, this would sound like a plausible assertion, and it is evidence of how Satan will use subtlety to sow confusion to those who may be searching for evidence of Jesus. To those who are looking for the truth, the water issuing from Jesus was for a sign and a wonder to those who have spiritual eyes. It issued from him to prove Jesus is the “Living water”, and in fact a source of life. Jesus is alive, so we needn’t look for his bones or DNA or any evidence he existed, he is with the Father in Heaven, waiting to be told to go and get his bride. In a 1996 writing by Professor Daniel C. Scavone, of the University of Southern Indiana, “The Holy Grail” is inexorably linked to “The Shroud of Turin”. This scholar has researched the history of both icons and has concluded that they are in fact one in the same, only having slightly differing histories and mythology connected with them. The key link in the stories is that both items were claimed to be in the care and possession of Joseph of Arimathea after the death of Jesus. And both artifacts were thought to possess some supernatural power by coming in contact with Jesus.
All of this interest in an artifact, that has proved to be elusive and having a very murky history at best, is unworthy of any real interest by a follower of Jesus Christ. He would not have us wasting our time trying to prove or disprove such items as we should be looking for treasure that is not made by hands. God knows that man has an inclination to worship objects and things apart from Him, which is idolatry. Just one of many examples is the time when Israel was being judged by the fiery serpents in the wilderness. God told Moses to craft a brass likeness of the serpent on a staff and those who looked upon it would be spared from death. Those who did not obey the Lord, suffered the bites of the serpents and died.
“And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.
And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.
And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.” Num 21:4-9
A problem arose in later years when the people worshipped the brass image of the serpent and King Hezekiah had to put it away from the people along with other idols.
“He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.” 2 Kings 18:4
This kind of thing has been repeated throughout history. People have been searching for Noah’s Ark for centuries, hoping to prove God’s word by its discovery. Should it ever be discovered it is a sure bet the relic will become the object of worship, rather than God. In fact, God has probably kept it hidden for just that reason.
God’s Word must be received by faith, not by having icons and relics available to be experienced by the believer to give them faith that His word is true. God does not have to prove Himself, He is, and you either believe it or don’t. Another example is the sword that David used to cut off Goliath’s head. After David accomplished this feat of valor in killing Goliath, God kept the sword in the possession of the Levite priests in Nob, until the time when David was in need of it. The sword had become the thing of legend, and the people would have attached some kind of power to it for worship, so it was necessary that it remain hidden as it was in Nob see 1 Samuel 21. How does Jesus feel about these items and man’s need for physical proof of who he says he is? I believe the account of his disciple, Thomas, when he faced the resurrected Jesus, will give us insight about that.
“But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” John 20:24-29
If you need faith to believe that Jesus is who he says that he is and that he is alive, pray for it and read God’s word. Seeing some old cup or a piece of cloth said to have Jesus’ image on it will only generate confusion and speculation and eventually doubt. The Bible is the thing you should be looking into because that has all the treasure you need. It will open up untold riches for you of a Heavenly and eternal nature and lead you to your very heart’s desire, which should be to be reconciled with your Father in Heaven through having the adoption in Jesus Christ.
“But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Rom 10:8-17
When people ascribe Jesus in connection with some relic or object, they are giving it a power God never intended for earthly inventions and things. When this is done, they are in effect saying that a part of Jesus and his Heavenly power and authority are here on Earth in that relic. That is false and it is from the author of confusion, Satan. So when you hear that someone has discovered one of these things assigned to Jesus by legend, do not believe it or waste any time on it, as it is false and will not gain you anything but confusion.
“Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.
For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
Behold, I have told you before.
Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.
For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” Matt 24:23-27
