Mind of Christ or Mind of Modafinil
…”Let nothing be done by strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind.” Phil 2:3
The faithful claim this silver bullet is completely safe, handy to use off label and easily self-administered. Among its devotees it is as if the anointed savior had fallen into their mouths as a sacrament in the form of a pill.
This pill offers the faithful follower the promise of empowerment to ably rise above the challenges that are required of those who seek success in this competitive materialistic world. Once believed in, it becomes a tall order to resist the temptation its advantages can bring to those who seek to outperform, not only their competitors but themselves as well.
Through marketing and the lobbying power of big pharma, and by the sheer numbers of those that claim its benefits far outweigh the potential negative side effects, Modafinil, (marketed as Provigil – short for promotes vigilance) is acquiring a mounting and significant presence in our drug infused society. People say this nootropic (mind drug) can make them smarter, clearer thinkers, keenly focused, enhancing their memory and capacity for thought, while maximizing their problem solving skills.
I, on the other hand, am a crusader for the Word of God which says “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” Philippians 2:3 Is there room here for mind-doping just so I can get a competitive edge over someone who stands in the way of my worldly pursuits. Is it a no-brainer that Modafinil has nothing to do with “lowliness of mind?”
The Bible warns us that a prime strategy of Satan at the end would be to deceive people and have them become deeply involved with drugs; especially psychiatric drugs which are the most direct way for him to gain a stranglehold over the mind.
He loves to get as many people as he can to believe they need drugs to function. When he convinces a soul of this it can easily be manipulated to partake of unnecessary drugs; whether FDA approved and prescribed or labelled as illegal, or stamped with society’s approval. Nothing now matters to that soul except the perceived benefit, for it always outweighs the cost. The drug has power to turn the mind and heart and soul away from trusting in, relying on and adhering to God. Corrupt spiritual powers are hard at work using individuals, governments and corporations to do their bidding and the unwise are all too willing to cooperate when they think there is something in this temporal life to gain from it.
The Outcast Eagles sing this scripture: “With Truth, Righteousness, the Gospel of Peace, Faith, Salvation and the Word of God, I am equipped to do the will of my Father, for Jesus is greater than he that is in the world.” These are the elements of the “Armour of God”. They are true enablers for they enable the mind and soul to stand against the spiritual deceptive forces that would pull us away from our true health-care provider to leave us wallowing in the world’s inviting quicksand that has the power to pull people down to destruction.
Nootropic drugs like Modafinil are so limited and misleading in comparison to Christ. Like a dumb idol carved from gold Modafinil can only shine in the light of this world and in the eyes of mortal men. Though what it claims to offer may look enticing it really only holds but the meager power to make men believe they should be something special in the world as they attempt to gain only temporary goods. Modafinil can’t offer the greater and eternal realities that Jesus does. A life in Jesus Christ receives power over the enemy of his soul and wins his love and favor that is beyond anything this world can conceive or imagine. The sound mind that can be had in Christ is the peace and wisdom of our mind built upon truly knowing and understanding God Himself.
There is hope that life can be victorious in this death struggle against illicit drugs. The souls of men and women are the stakes, of this there should be no confusion or doubt. The death tolls ring out every moment around the globe. Yet, hope can be found in God. He has written a prescription for all mankind 2000 years ago and signed it in blood. It is emblazoned in the Bible, written there for all the poor in spirit, the broken hearted, those captured by sin, the spiritually blind and for those who have been bruised by the evil of this world. For the desperate and the weary there is a lasting remedy a true cure. Amending for our spirit, soul and body that is not offered to us in the form of a pill but rather the man Jesus Christ, who signed the prescription with his own blood. Anyone who will come to him and give their whole life into his care can enter into the promise of being endowed with a “spirit of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. “ 2 Tim 1:7
God intends for us to have the mind of Christ, forget about the mind of Modafinil or any other drug.
